Josué Vergara was the match-winner for AA Gent in their victory over Club Brugge. The 19-year-old Panamanian striker scored the only goal and dominated the Bruges defence 2026.

Club Brugge failed to reach their usual level in this Flemish derby. Ivan Leko's side dropped to second place in the Jupiler Pro League with 9 points from 4 games. They now trail leaders Charleroi by three points. The next challenge is an away match against Lommel United on September 4th.

Josué Vergara gave defenders Brandon Mechele and Lee Hanbeom a difficult afternoon. The young forward used his imposing 1.96m frame to great effect. He got in front of Mechele for the winning goal, deflecting a Tiago Araujo cross past goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

According to the HLN reporter, Vergara was the real man of the match. Hans Vanaken received the official Jupiler Pro League award, but the Panamanian deserved a higher rating for his all-round play. He was physically dominant and never allowed Club Brugge's central pairing to settle.

Even his teammates are impressed by Vergara's physical presence. AA Gent defender Christian Burgess admitted he avoids the striker in training. "He grabs me in training," Burgess said. "I stay away from him. It's hard to get around him."

Burgess compared him to former Genk striker Paul Onuachu, though he stressed Vergara still has a long way to go. The Nigerian Onuachu scored 85 goals in 130 games for Genk and won the Golden Boot. Vergara now has three goals in eight starts for Gent.

The defeat at Gent is a setback in the title race. Club Brugge have scored 8 goals and conceded 2 this season, a goal difference of +6. They must quickly regain their momentum ahead of the trip to Lommel, who are eighth in the table.

The team needs to improve its defensive organisation after this performance. The coming weeks are busy with both league and European matches. Fans can view the full schedule on our fixtures page. The current table can also be followed via standings.

Seven months ago, Vergara was still playing in Panama for Tauro FC. Latvian side FK Auda discovered him and he played 20 matches there between March 8 and June 25. During that period he scored 14 goals, convincing Gent to sign him.

Since joining the Buffalo's he has had no break. His development will come with ups and downs, they acknowledge within the club. The young striker's minutes need to be managed carefully, especially with six Conference League matches coming up this autumn.

For Club Brugge, the task is to put this disappointment behind them. The focus is now fully on preparing for Lommel United. The team must rediscover its strengths to close the gap on Charleroi.
