Club Brugge has loaned out surplus striker Gustaf Nilsson to Hertha BSC. The 29-year-old Swede will spend the remainder of the season with the German capital club.
Nilsson joined Club Brugge from IFK Göteborg in the summer of 2024 for a fee of six million euros. In his first season, he found the net fourteen times. His contract still has two years remaining, running until mid-2028.
The arrival of Nicolò Tresoldi and the strong development of youngster Kaye Furo increased competition for the striker position. This pushed Gustaf Nilsson out of the club's plans. Consequently, Club Brugge stopped including him in first-team training sessions, paving the way for a departure. The player himself accepted a concrete offer from Hertha BSC, who are now playing in the 2. Bundesliga following relegation.
A Club Brugge watcher for HLN said of the deal: "A sigh of relief in the Basecamp." The club hopes this loan will prove financially beneficial in the long run.
Club Brugge paid a significant sum for Nilsson in 2024 and now wants to avoid his salary becoming a burden again. The club is counting on strong performances in Berlin. "Club must hope that Nilsson performs well in the German capital, so that next season, at the start of his final contract year, it does not have to pay his wages again," the same source stated. A second loan spell next year is not an option for the board.
This operation fits into a broader financial picture. For instance, Club Brugge does not want to pay twelve million euros for Millwall's Romain Esse. A fee of ten million euros is being asked for the 18-year-old Bisiwu. The focus is on a balanced squad composition.
While transfer matters are being resolved, Club Brugge is excelling in the Jupiler Pro League. The blue and blacks are second in the table with nine points from four matches. They have won three and lost one, with a recent form of LWWW. They have scored eight goals and conceded just two, giving them a +6 goal difference.
The team is, however, three points behind leaders Charleroi in the title race. The next opportunity to pick up points is the away fixture against Lommel United on September 4th. Lommel currently sits in eighth place. Fans can always follow the current standings and upcoming fixtures on our site.
Aside from Nilsson's departure, other developments are occurring at Club Brugge. The reserve team Club NXT has appointed Piet Cremers as its new head coach. Also, goalkeeper Yann Sommer chose Club and Knokke-Heist over offers from Tottenham Hotspur and Villarreal.
Former coach Ivan Leko voiced criticism. He denounced the U16 action of Carlos Forbs and Club Brugge's general style of play. These comments are generating additional discussion around the club.
The loan of Gustaf Nilsson solves a complex issue and gives the player minutes in Germany. For Club Brugge, it means squad space and the hope for a valuable return or a permanent transfer later. All attention now turns to the league, where the team has made a strong start and continues its assault on the title.
