Club Brugge and KRC Genk see opportunities in a BeNeLiga, but KAA Gent chairman Sam Baro has big doubts about a full-fledged merger. According to Het Laatste Nieuws, Club Brugge sees a cross-border competition as a logical next step. CEO Bob Madou states that cross-border competitions are the only remaining means to earn substantial domestic media revenue in the future. KRC Genk's chairman, Peter Croonen, also mentions the commercial potential of a larger market. "By creating a BeNeLiga, you immediately speak to a market of 30 million people. That's a completely new ecosystem from a commercial perspective", he tells the newspaper. The Genk chairman sees various options. A fully integrated competition is one of the options, but also cross-border play-offs or a joint cup competition could be interesting, according to him. Supporters hope to narrow the gap with the largest European competitions. At KAA Gent, a completely different sound is heard. Chairman Sam Baro understands the economic arguments, but places big question marks on a full-fledged BeNeLiga. He can be found in joint play-offs, but not in a full merger of both competitions. Yet, he sees mainly sporting risks for the Belgian clubs. "If you establish a full-fledged BeNeLiga, the Belgian clubs that finish fifth or sixth today will suddenly finish twelfth or thirteenth. Is that what we want? I don't think so."
