Club Brugge has been handed one of the most difficult draws of all Champions League participants, according to a new analysis. The Belgian champions face the fourth toughest group stage based on average opponent strength, as calculated by Football Meets Data in a study reported by Voetbalprimeur.be this week.

The data group ran 100,000 simulations to assess the average Elo rating of each club's draw. For Club Brugge, that rating sits 26 points above the tournament average. This means their opponents are significantly stronger than a typical Champions League side. Only Sabah, Manchester City and RC Lens received a more difficult draw according to the same methodology.

Club Brugge's opponents in the group stage are Liverpool, Inter, Napoli, PSV, Aston Villa, Bodø/Glimt, Lens and VfB Stuttgart. This list includes European giants and surprising powerhouses from smaller leagues. Club Brugge's average opponent is 26 points stronger than the Champions League average, the data analysis concluded.

At the opposite end of the spectrum is VfB Stuttgart. The German club benefited from the most favourable draw of all participants. Internazionale, Real Madrid and Shakhtar Donetsk also came out relatively well. Their average opponent is considerably weaker than Club Brugge's based on the Elo calculations. The study highlights the huge variance in draw luck under the new Champions League format.

This context makes Club Brugge's task crystal clear. Chairman Bart Verhaeghe and the rest of the management remain motivated despite the challenge. The objective of reaching the round of 16 still stands, even if the path there has become much steeper.

The Champions League draw comes as Club Brugge has made a strong start to the Jupiler Pro League season. The team currently sits second in the table with nine points from four matches. Manager Nicky Hayen's side has three wins and one loss. Their recent form reads LWWW.

In those four league games, Club Brugge scored eight goals and conceded just two. That results in a goal difference of +6. Leaders Charleroi have a three-point advantage, so the title race is wide open. The next test is an away match against Lommel United, scheduled for 4 September 2026. Lommel currently sits eighth.
