Club Brugge says goodbye to unnecessary left-back Bjorn Meijer. The 23-year-old Dutchman transfers to Sampdoria for a fee of one million euros, plus bonuses. The transfer fee stands in stark contrast to the six million euros the Belgian champion paid to FC Groningen four years ago.

Bjorn Meijer leaves Club Brugge and continues his career at Sampdoria. The 23-year-old left-back is currently in Italy for his medical and physical tests. If these do not cause any problems, he will sign a contract with the Italian second-division club.

The Dutchman had quickly risen to become a regular starter at his youth club and made the move to Brugge at the age of 19. In his first period at Club, he regularly received playing time, but his role became smaller in recent seasons due to persistent injuries.

The rise of Joaquin Seys made the competition on the left flank even greater. Last season, Meijer still accumulated around 1,400 minutes of playing time, but especially after the winter break, he largely disappeared from the scene. A transfer to Feyenoord seemed to be in the making last summer, but the Dutch club ultimately decided not to let the transfer go through.

In Sampdoria, a new challenge awaits. The club finished 13th in the Serie B last season and only escaped relegation two years ago on the last matchday. Meijer will be a teammate of Lorenzo Insigne and Danel Sinani, among others.

Last weekend, the 1.90-meter left-back came on for a few minutes against KV Kortrijk. The Dutchman, who has played 15 youth internationals for the Netherlands, hopes to breathe new life into his career in Italy.

Club Brugge is currently in second place in the Jupiler Pro League, with 3 points, 1 win, 0 draws, and 0 losses from 1 game. The last goals scored by Club Brugge are 3, and 0 goals conceded. The next match of Club Brugge is on February 13, 2027 against KVC Westerlo, who is in 18th place in the Jupiler Pro League.
