Contract and return
Club Brugge announced today the signing of Belgian left-back Matteo Dams on a contract until 2030 in the Jupiler Pro League. The 22-year-old, who has been playing for Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia since early 2025, is returning to Europe after a brief stint of one and a half years. Dams’ contract at Al-Ahli, which he signed one and a half years ago, ran until mid-2029, but the club did not let it run out and the player is now back in European football.
Career path
Dams began his youth career at the youth academy of Antwerp, but at a young age moved to Dutch top club PSV. At PSV he progressed through all youth levels and eventually played 24 matches for the first team. In 2025 he chose, at age 20, to embark on an adventure in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ahli, a decision that was met with surprise. Now he is returning to Europe, where he will take on the left-back position.
Role at Club Brugge
With Dams’ arrival, Club Brugge fills an important gap in the defence. He will be the backup to Joaquin Seys and must cover the departure of Bjorn Meijer to Sampdoria. Dams’ experience in both the Dutch and Saudi Arabian leagues makes him a versatile addition to the squad. The contract until 2030 gives the club long-term security.
Outlook
Club Brugge sees in Dams a player who can provide both defensive solidity and attacking options. His time in Saudi Arabia has added a new dimension, while his youth training at PSV and Antwerp gave him a solid foundation. With the contract running until 2030, Club Brugge is ready to allow Dams to grow within the club and strengthen the defence.
