Club Brugge is not yet ready for the Jupiler Pro League season start. That was the clear message from head coach Ivan Leko, who outlined the challenges facing the Belgian champions in a lengthy response ahead of the campaign.
What is the issue at Club Brugge?
The departures of Onyedika, Sandra, and Campbell, combined with injuries to key players like Ordonez-a €40 million-valued midfielder sidelined for weeks-have left gaps in experience and depth. Vanaken, Seys, and Mechele have only just returned to training after the World Cup, adding to the disruption. “Add it all up... So no, we’re not ready”, Leko admitted. Club Brugge, who finished second in the 2025 Jupiler Pro League with 38 points (22W-3D-7L) and a +26 goal difference (65 scored, 39 conceded), must now adapt quickly.
How does Leko view the future?
Despite the setbacks, the Croatian remains upbeat. New signings Sommer, Lee Han-Beom, Potts, and Vasovic have impressed, though the latter three need time to settle. “The players who started on day one have done excellent work”, Leko noted. Yet he stresses the team needs weeks to achieve the desired balance. With a tough August ahead, including Champions League fixtures, every training session and match is vital.
What lies ahead for Club Brugge?
Early league games against KV Kortrijk, OH Leuven, Cercle, and AA Gent offer a manageable start. But Leko warns: “If you excel in Europe but trail the leader by seven points, it’s over.” The pressure is intense, especially with the safety net of play-offs now gone. Club Brugge must deliver immediately, with their next official fixture away to KVC Westerlo on 13 February 2027.
